Background:

In January 2003, Michigan Tech started the development of railway engineering education. The first step was the development of an International Summer Program in Railway Engineering to Finland which offered first time during Summer 2004. The "Summer in Finland" program continues to attract students from several different disciplines.

In 2005, Michigan Tech established Railroad Engineering and Activities Club (REAC), which became the first official Student Chapter of the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance of Way Association (AREMA) in 2006. REAC was established to

  • Raise awareness and interest in railroad engineering.
  • Educate the student body about the opportunities and benefits of a career in railroading.
  • Organize and participate in events that increase the visibility of railroad industry on campus and among general public.

Encouraged by the growing interest for rail transportation two additional on-campus courses are currently being offered to further expand the understanding of Tech graduates in rail related topics, Public Transit Planning and Engineering and Track Engineering and Design.

Rail Transportation Program (RTP)

In Fall 2007, Michigan Tech officially established Rail Transportation Program (RTP) within its Michigan Tech Transportation Institute as a central entity for rail activities and appointed Pasi Lautala as the Director of the Program. RTP will form the foundation for all the activities in the field with an objective to make rail transportation a permanent part of the university curriculum by 2010. Figure 1 presents the history of the RTP development.

In general, RTP supported activities can be divided to three groups – Education, Projects & Research and Events & Extracurricular Activities. The activity groups are not separated entities, but rather integrated with each other (Figure below).

RTP has close ties and extensive cooperation with rail industry. Our program partners and other industry companies are actively recruiting program participants for internship and full-time positions. They also participate in the program by providing financial support, scholarships, and other sponsorship, such as guest lectures and hosting field visits. Many recent graduates involved in the program from several disciplines have selected railways as their choice for post-graduate career.
