RV Agassiz Scientific Excursions
Captain Jim Vivian and Chief Scientist Marcel Dykstra put on an amazing "show" this past Saturday for 108
community members (about 1/3 of those who attended were ages 7-17 years)
who had the opportunity to take a scientific excursion (one of six
offered) aboard the Agassiz at the Strawberry Festival. Joan Chadde introduced each excursion and stated the funders and sponsors, and the
importance of having citizens act as informed stewards of the Great Lakes.

Associate Professor Judith Perlinger is one of two faculty at Michigan Tech awarded Fulbright Scholarships
Associate Professor Judith Perlinger (CEE) was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to conduct research at the Norwegian Institute for Water Research 2010-11. Perlinger and her research group have developed technology to measure concentrations of hazardous and climate-relevant organic chemicals in the atmosphere. During her visit, Perlinger will collaborate with European and Chinese scientists to model and measure concentrations of these atmospheric chemicals and their rate of exchange between the atmosphere and forest canopies.

Dr. Mayer Earns Binational Award
Professor Alex Mayer has received the Lake Superior Binational Forum's 2011 individual Environmental Stewardship Award for the US. The award honors "extraordinary achievements by ordinary people." The Lake Superior Binational Forum is composed of 12 Canadian and 12 American stakeholders, representing industrial, Tribal/First Nations, business, environmental, recreational, tourism, health, labor and academic interests. |

Steel Bridge Team Second in the Nation
Tech's bridge team nabbed a second-place finish at the AISC National Student Steel Bridge Competition, held May 20 to 21, at Texas A&M University. The Michigan Tech Steel Bridge Team won First Place overall in the 2011 Regionals. |

South African Graduate Student Plans to Bring Education to Her People
Taile (pronounced Dah-ee-lay) Leswifi is studying environmental engineering on Fulbright and PEO Sisterhood scholarships and researching new ways to produce a sustainable, renewable, low-cost source of hydrogen energy from water and sunlight, energy that does not add to the pollution of the environment. |

Great Lakes Research Center: An Investment in the State, the Nation and the World's Freshwater Resources
The new Michigan Tech Great Lakes Research Center will include aquatic laboratories, a hydraulics lab, coastal research instrumentation, boathouse facilities, offices and conference rooms, providing a home at Michigan Tech for interdisciplinary research and education related to the Great Lakes. |
