Why Michigan Tech?

What Skills Will I Gain by Completing this Program?

Engineering professionals of the 21st century will be required to have many skills beyond strong traditional engineering skills. Some other skills include:

  • ability to write and orally communicate
  • ability to work in diverse teams
  • ability to build coalitions and consensus
  • ability to devise strategies and long range plans
  • ability to budget and manage projects
  • ability to work in other countries

These skills are required for all engineers employed in or outside the United States. Also, engineering services are expected to increase around the world in the future and the Peace Corps experience will be a valuable asset for those who wish to work outside the United States. In fact, many companies are seeking graduate degree engineers who have experience working in a foreign country. For example, while the North American market for engineering services is expected to increase annually by 3-4% over the next decade, many foreign markets are expected to increase 10% per year.
