This web site provides information on/from the PICO-NARE field
station, located on the summit caldera of Pico mountain in the
Azores. Paulo Fialho (University of the Azores, Angra do Heroismo
campus) has also set up a marine boundary layer station. Information
on that station is posted here.
The following information is provided.
- Data Exchange page
- Recent data.
Plots of FIELD data are updated at least daily, along with
recent automated photos and occasional
text summaries of interesting events.
- PICO-NARE/ITOP fly-by intercomparisons
- T-shirts
are available at the PICO-NARE Madalena house. ITOP participants
can call
(+351) 292-623-864 to buy one for 12 euros.
- Preprints of papers based on PICO-NARE measurements
- Regional and hemispheric impacts of anthropogenic
and biomass burning emissions on summertime CO and O3 in the
North Atlantic lower free troposphere,

- Absorption coefficients by aerosols in remote areas: a new
approach to decouple dust and black carbon absorption coefficients
using seven-wavelength Aethalometer data, P. Fialho,
A. D. A. Hansen, and R. E. Honrath, J. Aerosol Sci. (submitted
May 3, 2004): Download preprint.
- Station location and photos.
Details on the station location and site photographs.
- Summary of MBL sites in the Azores
- Measurements, methods, and contacts.
A table of measurements made at the station, along with
techniques, uncertainties, and contact information for each.
- Contact Information.
How to reach us, including while in the field.
- This research is supported by NOAA, Office of Global Programs,
NSF, Atmospheric Chemistry program, and the Portuguese Science
and Technology Foundation.
- This is a password-protected web page for ICARTT participants.
There is also a public PICO-NARE website.
Current status and upcoming events.
- The station is currently fully operational.
- In addition to the data shown in the recent-data plots,
black carbon (aethalometer) and non-methane hydrocarbon measurements
are being made. See the methods and contacts
section for contact information.
