Superior Search and Rescue (SSAR) requests your support to improve our search capabilities. In particular, we would like to obtain two handheld GPS (global positioning system) units, improve our communication equipment, and acquire funds to cover our annual operating expenses.
Superior Search and Rescue is a local volunteer organization that provides search and rescue services to Houghton and Keweenaw counties (a total of 1600 square miles) and also assists other counties' search efforts. During the past six years, SSAR has been alerted more than 27 times and participated in 16 actual searches. We provide a wonderful information source to all SAR units with Internet access. SSAR's members are local volunteer firefighters, MTU students, loggers, nurses, county and city workers, local store owners, and architects. They receive no monetary compensation and must leave their jobs to search. Members provide their own equipment and pay for direct expenses.
