Doctoral student Lauren Fry (Environmental Engineering) has been awarded a graduate scholarship from Qualitative Environmental Analysis (QEA), an environmental engineering consulting firm. Fry, formerly a Peace Corps volunteer in Cameroon, has developed a research program that focuses on the barriers to sanitation coverage in developing countries, including the impacts of global change. QEA initiated its scholarship program in 2006 to support graduate student education in environmental analysis of natural systems. |

Ann Brady, scientific and technical communication/arts (STC/A) program director and assistant professor, received an early career/best paper award from the American Society for Engineering Education for “Interdisciplinary International Senior Design: How Service Learning Projects in Developing Countries Support ABET Accreditation,” in the environmental engineering division.
The award, given June 26 on the moonlit beaches of Waikiki, was accepted by co-authors Linda Phillips, international senior design director and lecturer in civil and environmental engineering, and undergraduate Karina Jousma (STC), who presented the paper during the society’s annual conference in Honolulu.
“I am deeply honored to receive an award from an engineering society,” said Brady. “It demonstrates the power of interdisciplinary and student-professor working relationships.” |

| Joan Chadde and the Center for Science and Environmental Outreach received $125,000 over five years from the Kinship Foundation to continue the outdoor science and environmental educational field trip program, which serves K-8 students in 19 school districts in a five-county area of the western Upper Peninsula. Last year, more than 3,000 students participated in 73 field trips led by the center's staff. |

| Joan Chadde, education programs coordinator for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has earned the Making a Difference Staff Award for Creating Connections award, which recognizes staff who serve the community by initiating partnerships within Michigan Tech or with community organizations, incorporate the ideals and interests of Michigan Tech into their daily work and serve as a mentor or model citizen to Michigan Tech community members outside of the university. Chadde has helped forge a strong partnership between Michigan Tech and 19 school districts. She has also secured funding to expand the programs that Tech offers to the school districts. |

| Associate
Professor Kris G. Mattila was elected chair
of the Construction Safety Standards Commission, Department
of Labor and Economic Growth, in November. Mattila represents
the general public. Then-governor John Engler appointed him
in July 1999 and again in March 2001. The Construction Safety
Standards Commission has the authority, along with the director
of the department, to promulgate construction safety standards
in Michigan. It is the vision of the commission that Michigan
become a national leader in safety for industry by incorporating
the changing needs of new technologies and methods into standards |

R. Mihelcic, civil and environmental engineering
professor and co-director of the Sustainable Futures Institute,
has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Association
of Environmental Engineering & Science Professors (AEESP).
Mihelcic begins his three-year term in October.
The mission of AEESP is to assist its members in the development
and dissemination of knowledge in environmental engineering
and science. AEESP also seeks to strengthen and advance the
environmental engineering field through cooperation among
academic and other communities. In 2002 Mihelcic was awarded
AEESP's Wiley Interscience Award for Outstanding Contributions
to Environmental Engineering & Science Education.
