Projects & Research

Senior Design Projects

Michigan Tech is continuously exploring topics for senior design projects in rail topics. Some of the past projects have included Development of an automated people mover for Michigan Tech campus. For more opportunities in senior design opportunities, contact RTP Director.

Enterprise Program

Rail Transportation Program is actively working with the industry to identify rail related project opportunities for the current Enterprise Team members interested in rail topics. Future consideration will be given for the development of Transportation Enterprise with a strong connection to rail transportation.

Internships and co-ops

Every year several Michigan Tech students take advantage of the internship / co-op positions offered by the Rail Transportation Program Partners and other industry companies. Internship and co-op positions provide an excellent opportunity for a student to get hands-on experience in the daily activities in railroading. RTP facilitates the interactions between industry and students. The positions vary from large Class I railroads to engineering consulting companies and rail equipment manufacturers.

Faculty-led research projects

Michigan Tech faculty is actively exploring opportunities to assist in the development of 21st rail transportation. Examples of past and current projects include Evaluation of Shipper Requirements and Rail Service for Northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Transportation in the Keweenaw Historical Park and Synthesis of Railroad Engineering Best Practices in Deep Seasonal Frost and Permafrost Areas. For more information on research activities and reports contact RTP Director.
