Rail Scholarships Awarded to Michigan Tech Students

Six Michigan Tech students have received scholarships from the American Railroad and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA). The students were selected by national panels of experts from the rail industry. Industry representatives noted that it is amazing an accomplishment that so many recipients are from one university.

Recipients of the AREMA Michigan Tech Alumni Scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, are
* Joe Zellmer, a senior in civil engineering from Forestville, Wis.
* Nils Stenrig, a senior in electrical engineering from Pelkie
* Amanda Larsen, a senior in construction management from Roseville

Recipients of the AREMA Educational Foundation Scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, are
* Lauren Bendes, a senior in civil engineering student from Clarkson
* Brent Marsh, a junior in civil engineering from Reed City

The recipient of the AREMA Education Committee 24 Scholarship, valued at $1,000, is
* Johnathon White, a senior in civil engineering from Grand Rapids

In addition to the AREMA scholarships, six students received Union Pacific and CSX Transportation scholarships through directed contributions to Michigan Tech.

Recipients of the Union Pacific Scholarships, valued at $3,000 each, are
* Tom Bartlett, a senior in electrical engineering from Elkhart, Ind.
* Shane Ferrell, a senior in civil engineering from Cheboygan

Recipients of the CSX Transportation Scholarships, valued at $500 each, are
* Darryl Babbitt, a junior in civil engineering from Frederic
* Justin Foley, a senior in civil engineering and physics from Carver, Minn.
* Brent Marsh, a junior in civil engineering from Reed City
* Nils Stenvig, a senior in electrical engineering from Pelkie

Michigan Tech has become is recognized as a leading universities in railroad engineering education in the United States. Last year, the Railroad Engineering and Activities Club became the first student chapter for AREMA, and rail recruiters have returned to campus with internships and full-time employment opportunities.
