CE 4404: Introduction to Railroad Engineering (3 credits - Under Development)

Introduction to Railroad Engineering (currently under development) is an on-campus alternative to the International Railway Engineering. The course will provide the exposure to the real-life applications via technology, on-campus projects and web conferences with the industry. Junior status preferred.

CE 4405 International Railroad Engineering (3 credits)

International Introduction to Railroad Engineering is a versatile railroad course offered in May-June every year as part of the Summer in Finland Program. It is developed for all engineering (and non-engineering) disciplines and introduces the rail transportation to students from practical point of view. Interactive classroom lectures and regular assignments in various topics are complemented by several field visits that allow participants to observe how the material presented during the lectures is applied in the real world situations. Junior status preferred. For more detailed information Click here for course page.

CE 5408: Public Transit Planning & Engineering

This course will explore planning, engineering, and policy aspects of public transit. All majors can are encouraged to participate. For more detailed information, see Course Description (pdf) or contact Bill Leder bleder@mtu.edu

CE 5409: Railroad Track Engineering and Design

Track Engineering and Design introduces mainly civil engineering students to the design and development of construction documents for railroad projects. The course takes a hands-on approach where assigned readings, interactive lectures, homework assignments and other instructional materials will be applied by participants to complete a real-life rail project. The students will learn the basic track design concepts and will understand the project steps required to advance a track construction project from idea stage to the completion of design plans and documents. No prerequisites, but previous experience in using CAD preferred, as both MicroStation and Geopak software will be intensively used throughout the course. For more detailed information, see Course Syllabus (pdf) please contact Pasi Lautala (906-487-3547, (ptlautal@mtu.edu) .
