Feasibility Study for Land Use Options of the 6th Ring Curichi PDF Report 900 Kb

Location:
The curichi (wetland) that was studied for this project was located near the 6th Ring Road in District 10 (SW corner) of Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
Introduction:
The 6th Ring Curichi was created 50 years ago and is now used primarily as a dump by residents and businesses. Because of the contamination, there are diseases and illnesses associated with the curichi. The design team analyzed various land use options to rehabilitate the site and ultimately this study will be used as a model for other curichis in Santa Cruz.
Design Criteria:
Each option was evaluated based on the following criteria:

Appropriate Technology
Sustainability
Economic Feasibility
Environmental and health impacts
Social and Political Issues

Land Use Options:
The 6th Ring Curichi covers a land area of 50 acres and there are several feasible land use options. The following options were analyzed based on the design criteria:

Full Scale Waste Removal
Natural Space Restoration
Green Space Development
Constructed Wetland
Total and Partial Fill
Connecting 6th Ring Road

Smaller Scale Projects:
A phased action plan was created by the design team and outlines steps for working towards a rehabilitated curichi. Some of the smaller projects that can be implemented immediately include:

Educational Programs
Collection Sites for Waste
Community Watch Program
Recycling Programs
Composting Projects

Recommendations:

The design team evaluated land use options based on community input, on site investigations, and research. A full scale clean up of the 6th Ring Curichi is recommended in conjunction with educational programs about proper waste disposal and recycling. Community involvement and ownership is essential to the success of this project. Other land use options recommended are natural space, green space and treatment wetlands. These options need to be evaluated further. Smaller scale projects are recommended for implementation immediately.
