Instituto Americano Montero Drainage Design - Site Master Plan

CE 4905 Senior Design Summer 2004
Slide Show Scenes of 2004 Projects

Instituto Americano Montero is located 30 miles north of Santa Cruz.

TARJ Engineers was contracted by the school’s missionary, Kay Twilley, to perform a site master plan, design for drainage relief, and develop a topographic survey of the property.

Property Conditions:
The property has about 1 meter of elevation throughout the 25 acres.

Due to elevated sidewalks and clayey soil type causes pooling of rainfall and makes it difficult for the existing K-12 school to operate adequately.

Cost:

The estimated cost to install the recommended design is 8900 Bolivianos ($1100 US) In addition to the installation cost there is a yearly maintenance associated with the design. This cost is 200 Bolivianos ($25 US). This cost includes regularly cleaning the ditches and catch basins of debris and soil sediment and flushing the pipes twice a year.

Existing Drainage Structures:

As of June 2004 two American volunteer civil engineers installed concrete lined ditches that connect to catch basins and one main channel that runs on the east side of the property.

Topographic Survey:

A topographic survey was performed on the site. The topo gives the client a map of the property that shows building locations and site elevations.

These pictures illustrate the survey conditions on the site

Recommended Design:

TARJ Engineering recommends a combination of 8” PVC pipe with concrete catch basins and concrete lined ditches. This provides the safest, most cost effective, and easy to maintain design.

The design was presented in two phases. Phases were used to separate the design into areas of most concern. They also assist the owner in planning the work to be done by volunteer work groups

Site Master Plan:

The site master plan provides the client with a plan for a proposed junior university. TARJ included two plans for the owner to choose from. One plan allows for one multi-level building and the other identifies locations for several single level buildings.
The plans also show a parking lot for busses and one student and faculty.
