The ultimate utility player, Dave Perram serves four roles for the CEE Department: Laboratory Director, Research Scientist, Adjunct Lecturer, and Chemical Hygiene Officer. Dave has been at MTU since 1985.

Laboratory Director

Management of state-of-the-art analytical/research laboratories. Including the design/renovation of laboratories, approval of the purchase of laboratory equipment and supplies, supervise/perform the repair of laboratory equipment, maintain a co-operative/productive work environment for faculty, staff, and students. Works with researchers using the Environmental Engineering Laboratories to support the laboratories financial needs. Maintain growth of the analytical laboratory in a supportive direction of future funded research by reviewing/evaluating new analytical methods, working closely with faculty to understand their needs, and recommending/specifying new equipment (and facilities) for the greatest versatility for both existing laboratories and the new Dow ESE building.

Research Scientist II

Responsible for conducting research projects with an emphasis on practical applications. Development of new procedures relating to environmental engineering process application and environmental/analytical chemistry techniques. Supervision of full-time staff, graduate students, technicians within MTU, at remote facilities, and contracted work. Make decisions on how research will be conducted to fulfill obligations of contracted work. Prepare papers, reports, abstracts, presentations etc. as required. Generate proposals, as a principal and co-principal investigator, to support the operation of the Environmental Analytical Laboratory. 50% of the support for this position comes from research projects.

Adjunct Lecturer

Instruct CE-590 "Practical Applications and Analytical Techniques for Environmental Engineers." Perram is developing a video series to consist of six, three-hour presentations on safety, quality control, operation, maintenance, and application of analytical techniques and general laboratory equipment. These videos will be used in CE-590 and as a tool to educate those unable to take CE-590, which is only offered in the Fall. The course is designed to teach graduate students the analytical skills required by the engineering projects that they are working on as part of their thesis. The requirements for completion of this course are designed around each individual student’s needs taking the course.

Chemical Hygiene Officer

Responsible for the development, implementation, and enforcement of the chemical hygiene program for the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. Member of the hazwopper response team. Member of the Presidential Safety Committee and the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department Laboratory and Safety Committee.
