Why Michigan Tech?

Hi, I’m Tim Martin from Stillwater, Minnesota. I am currently seeking an MS in Civil Engineering through the MI program. My academic interests fall into the realms of water resources, construction and the social effects of development projects on communities. I first learned of the MI program as a freshman here at Tech where I received a BS in Civil Engineering and considered it always to be a possibility for furthering my education. After traveling to the Dominican Republic with the International Senior Design (ISD) program in May 2003 I decided that this was a journey to take in life. While in the DR we designed a water distribution system for a rural community. Seeing what an impact using my education could have on people’s lives had a profound effect on my desires for my future. In 2004 I was lucky to be able to return to the DR and make a trip to Bolivia to assist ISD classes.

The Upper Peninsula is a great place to attend college and allows me to enjoy many of my favorite pass times. The copious quantity of snowfall lends to my avid passions of Nordic skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing. This year I hope to learn to telemark as well. Snow might be the hardest thing for me to be away from while on assignment. The other seasons are great to hike, camp, paddle and play some ultimate. My other great joy is to travel to new places and sample the local beverages of choice. I am happy that I have been able to build time in foreign lands into my education.
