Dr. James Mihelcic is a Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Michigan
Technological University (Houghton, Michigan). He co-directs the
Michigan Tech Sustainable Futures Institute and directs the Master’s
International program in Civil & Environmental Engineering.
He is a member of Engineers without Borders-USA
and an elected member of the Board of Directors of the Association
of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP).
Dr. Mihelcic
was awarded the AEESP-Wiley Interscience Award for Outstanding Contributions
to Environmental Engineering & Science Education and has also
received his Department’s Outstanding Faculty award and was
a finalist for the Michigan Tech Distinguished Teaching Award. He
has devoted extensive professional time in the Dominican Republic,
Jamaica, and Vanuatu working on community-based engineering projects.
Dr. Mihelcic is also the lead author of the textbook Fundamentals
of Environmental Engineering (John Wiley & Sons, 1999)
that has been translated into Spanish as Fundamentos de Ingenieria
Ambiental (Limusa Wiley, 2001). Dr. Mihelcic has studied environmental
policy as an AAAS-U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Environmental
Fellow and is currently writing a book titled “Sustainable
Development Engineering: Engineering appropriate solutions for the
developing world.”
