The Michigan Tech Asphalt Mix Design Team entered the Wisconsin Asphalt Pavement Association (WAPA) Competition for the first time in 2003. The nine undergraduate students in the team, sponsored by the Pavement Design, Construction, and Materials Enterprise, designed a Superpave Hot-Mix Asphalt Mixture to meet Wisconsin DOT specifications with attention to economics, structural properties, and performance attributes. In addition to sample specimens, the team produced a comprehensive mix design report and video presentation. The team's efforts secured a first place finish in the WAPA competition and continued to victory in the National Competition sponsored by the National Asphalt Pavement Association. This competition demonstrates the ability of Michigan Tech students to produce a practical product consistent with industry standards.
