 Spotlight on Diporeia lab work: PONAR collections of benthic macroinvertebrates, organisms living on or in the sediment, are being used to map distributions of these animals in Lake Superior. to help us learn about their distribution in the lake. We are also interested in learning about their nutrition and contamination by toxic organic chemicals. We need to separate individual animals (both Diporeia and Mysis) from the samples and store them for later analysis. Maxime Bridoux will be measuring their pigment content to see who they’ve been eating and Noel Urban will look at stable isotope signatures for the same purpose. Judith Perlinger will conduct toxic substance measurements. All of this means that we must separate (pick) and preserve hundreds of these organisms. It’s a huge job and one that calls for a team effort.
