Computer Modeling of Lake Superior

spotSpotlight On: Computer Modeling - scientists and engineers use computer models to help understand the way lakes work and to simulate and predict the ways in which changes in pollutant inputs or the introduction of exotic species might impact the ecosystem. We are conducting two exercises using U.S. EPA's AQUATOX model. The first is to examine food web function by constructing a model for Lake Superior that includes nutrients, phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish. Next we examine transfer of pollutants through the food web by modeling PCBs. This is a special opportunity to sample food web components on deck, observe them in the laboratory and then model them in the classroom.
