On: Fish - we have two objectives in working with fish
on this cruise. The first is to consider what fish morphology
(body and fin shape and the position of the eyes and mouth)
can tell us about the feeding strategies of a particular species.
We have brought a collection of fresh fish on board and will
take a look at them, seeking to deduce some characteristics
of their life history. Second, we are interested in what fish
eat, i.e. their position in the food web. In Lake Superior,
lake trout occupy the top position in the food web. We have
a hundred or so frozen lake trout stomachs with us and our students
will dissect these and examine their contents to find out ‘how
to make a lake trout'.
