STUDY ABROAD PROCEDURES

The course approval process for studying abroad can be very time consuming. It is the student's responsibility to plan accordingly and provide the required information.

  • Choose a country and school where you would like to study. Current programs through MTU can be researched on the International Programs and Services website (IPS): http://www.ips.mtu.edu.
  • From the IPS office: Obtain an application packet, information on courses that have been pre-approved, and where to find other courses (most school's websites have some course information). The pre-approved course lists are available on the IPS website (http://www.ips.mtu.edu).
  • Once you are accepted to study abroad by IPS, determine what courses you still need for your degree meet with the CEE Advisor, if necessary. It is typically easier to plan your schedule for your semester/year abroad and working your remaining MTU semesters around it. Pay attention to the requirements to be accepted into the study abroad program prior to going through the application/course evaluation process.
  • It is much easier to approve general education (distribution) courses for study abroad. Keep this in mind when planning your Michigan Tech and study abroad schedules.
  • For non-departmental courses (other than CE): List the classes you would like to take abroad on your Study Abroad Course Pre-Approval Form. For the classes that are not already on the Pre-Approved University lists, attach a course description. Submit to IPS for processing.
  • For Civil and Environmental Engineering (CE) courses:

List the CE courses you want to take on the Study Abroad Course Pre-Approval Form. For CE classes that are not already on the Pre-Approved University lists, attach the following:

    Course Descriptions

Prerequisites: must include the course title not just the number. If the name is too general (ie. fluid mechanics may be called water engineering by some schools) provide a course description for the prerequisite(s) also. A course description for all prerequisites is preferred.

Syllabus, if available. Some course descriptions are too vague and cannot be evaluated without a syllabus. It is up to you to request this information from your host university contact whose name and email address will be given to you by IPS upon your study abroad acceptance.
