Exam Information
The FE Exam is offered twice per year, each October and April. The exam is offered on Michigan Tech's campus and is administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). Details regarding exam dates, registration deadlines, costs, etc. can be found at www.ncees.org.
The FE Exam is 8 hours long, with one 4-hour session in the morning and another in the afternoon. The morning portion is a general exam common to all disciplines. During the afternoon session, you may opt to take a general exam or a discipline-specific (chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, industrial, or mechanical) exam. The specific breakdown of topics is available at www.ncees.org.
Review Sessions
The Houghton Douglass Chapter of the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers offers a review session for the April exam each spring. The review session covers topics on the morning portion of the exam. There is no review session for the fall exam.
The Civil & Environmental Engineering Department also offers a review which follows the Houghton Douglass Chapter session. This review session focuses on the afternoon discipline-specific areas for Civil & Environmental Engineering students.
Review Material
It is recommended that all examinees purchase a copy of the FE Reference Handbook to use as while studying for the exam. The Reference Handbook will be the only reference material allowed in the exam (a new copy will be given at the exam) and being familiar with it beforehand will be helpful.
Other study material can be purchased from ASCE (Dillman 101) or online at www.ncees.org.
